If you are interested in finding out more about para-swimming in the East Midlands whether it’s for pleasure, to improve your fitness or you wish to swim competitively, then you have come to the right place.

The East Midlands has a proud history of helping disability swimmers reach the top of the sport, most recently Paralympic, Commonwealth, British, European and World swimming champion Oliver Hynd MBE and Paralympic and World swimming champion Charlotte Henshaw.

The East Midlands region aims to provide the best help and appropriate opportunities to all those who wish to participate in swimming in whatever capacity they choose, whether it be as an athlete, coach, teacher, official or volunteer.

Competitions

When joining clubs many of the swimmers wish to partake in competitions. There are various levels of swimming events ranging from club level right through to national and international scale. Find out more about the different levels of competitions available to para-swimmers here.

A range of open meets, named Licensed Meets take place during each year. Para-swimmers can enter licensed meets around the UK swimming alongside non-disabled swimmers. You can find details of the differerent categories of licensed meets and also a link to the full list of meets here. You will need to a Swim England member to compete in any of the Swim England licensed meets.

Midlands Regional Para-Swimming Training Programme

The Midlands Regional Para-Swimming Programme has been set up by the West Midlands, East Midlands and Swim England Para-Swimming to engage and support swimmers across the Midlands with an impairment that can be classified under the World Para-Swimming categories to develop their skills, experience and knowledge through their journey as a Para-Swimmer.
The Regional Para-Swimming Programme Aims;

  • Introduce swimmers and coaches to the Para-Swimming Pathway.
  • Identify and develop talented swimmers to progress onto the Para-Swimming Pathway.
  • Develop the knowledge and skills of teachers and coaches to support the Para-Swimming Pathway.

The programme will consist of 6 Training sessions across the Midlands at various pools to increase access for Para-Swimmers to gain specialised training. Each training opportunity will have a land session aimed to develop swimmers fundamental movements and a pool session aimed to develop stroke and skill technique of all four competitive strokes.

Para-Swimming Talent ID days

Talent ID days designed to search for the para-swimming talent of the future are organised in England.  If you fall under the following criteria then find a talent ID day may be just what you are looking for.

  • A swimmer with physical or visual impairments
  • Aged 16 or under
  • Have the ability to swim at least 25m unaided

Para-Swimming National Coach Development Programmes 2020-21

The National Coach Development Programmes provides coaches with an opportunity to learn and further develop their coaching skills to enhance their knowledge and experience of working with Para-Swimmers. These programmes will provide support to coaches working with Para-Swimmers and are centred on the pillars of athlete development and coaching behaviours. Leading experts in Para-Swimming will deliver and support the programmes.
