Long Eaton Swimming Club Masters Squad had a fantastic weekend at the British Gas Masters and Senior Age Group Championships at Ponds Forge, Sheffield, bringing home one World, 2 European and 4 British Records, in addition to 15 gold, 3 silver and 7 bronze medals.

The ladies 160-199 years 4 x 100m Medley team of Maggi Tuck, Helen Gorman, Becky Fox and Helen Akers stormed to victory in a new World record time, shattering by 11 seconds the previous record held by a team from Australia.
In the younger age category of 120-159 years, Helen Akers and Becky teamed up with Laura Marinelli and Elizabeth Simpson to set a new British Record mark, and Helen and Liz were joined by Pete Irving and Colin Prescott to take victory and a new European record in the 160-199 years mixed 4 x 200m Freestyle relay.

Top individual performer was Helen Gorman (40-44 years) who won 3 gold medals in 50m, 100m and 200m Breaststroke, and broke her own British record in the 100m. Mary Holland (65-69 years) was a double winner in 100m Freestyle and 400m Freestyle and there were also individual gold medals for Maggi Tuck (50-54 years) in 100m Backstroke and Martin Sarsfield (60-64 years) in one of the most punishing events of the weekend, 200m Butterfly.

Martin also won a silver medal in the longest event, 1500m Freestyle, whilst Helen Akers (40-44 years) was second in 200m Freestyle.
Three bronze medals went to Pete Irving (45-49 years) in 100m and 200m Freestyle and 200m Backstroke, while Helen picked up one for 100m Freestyle and Mary for 50m Butterfly.
There were five other victorious relay teams, made up with the addition of Kaye Arbon, Andrew Burnes, Greg Cherry and Masters’ coach Dave Akers. There was also one silver medal winning team and 2 teams took bronze.

This was the last competitive outing for the squad before many of them travel to Italy in June for the World Masters Championships, where they have a number of further records in their sights.
Coach Dave Akers said this was a fantastic weekend of swimming from the Long Eaton swimmers, exceeding all expectations despite heavy training and a tough programme of events.
