22nd July 2013

British Gas has launched SwimBritain with the aim of encouraging 500,000 more people to swim regularly by 2015.

As part of the programme, British Gas is hosting the first-ever team relay event to get Brits into the water at 11 venues across the country.

There is a SwimBritain challenge for adults and children, both designed for teams of four:

SwimBritain: a relay in 250m legs. Each team member swims four legs, 1000m in total, to reach a team goal of 4000m.

Little SwimBritain: a relay in 125m legs for families and children aged between 8 and 16. Each team must include at least one adult and each team member swims four legs, 500m total, to reach a team goal of 2000m.

There will be team relay events at 11 venues around the country in August and September, including an open water event at Blenheim Palace. Each event will be supported by a GB swim star.

East Midlands teams can sign up for events at Coventry Sports Centre (Saturday 31st August), Ponds Forge, Sheffield (Sunday 1st September), or Manchester Aquatics Centre (Saturday 21st September).

Each SwimBritain participant is offered four free coaching sessions at local pools and there are lots of helpful tools and tips on www.swimbritain.co.uk.
