The ASA is the governing body for the sport in England. In this section you will find all you need to know about joining a club or competing in England and becoming a swimming teacher or coach.

Swimmer Classifier Status

If you are seeking to understand the classification status of a disability swimmer then read on for the relevant international and British Swimming letter codes and definitions.

IPC – International Classification

N (New) Indicates an athlete who has not undergone an IPC international classification but may have a national classification.
R (Review) Indicates an athlete who has undergone an IPC international classification and has obtained a classification for international competition, however will require a classification review according to the classification rules of the sport.
C (Confirmed) Was formerly a P and indicates an athlete who has undergone an IPC international classification and obtained a classification for international competition and does not require any further classification according to the classification rules of the sport.
NE (Not Eligible) Indicates an athlete who fails to meet the eligibility criteria for disability swimming. This does not question the presence of a genuine impairment.

 

British Swimming – National Classification

BS (National) Indicates a classification carried out by National classifiers where no further classification is required according to the classification rules of the sport.
R (Review) Indicates an athlete who has undergone a classification and obtained a classification for national competition, however will require a classification review according to the classification rules of the sport.
NE (Not eligible) As above
Exception code P (classification protested) This is now included within the exception codes. This code will distinguish athletes with previous P status from athletes with previous PP status.
