Workforce Development

Workforce Development is the umbrella title for the combined work of the Institute of Swimming delivery/education team (IoS) and the ASA Awarding Body.  It also includes a team of Workforce Development Officers who are working on key areas to deliver the UK Coaching Framework.

This team of people is responsible for the development and delivery of training and the continuing development of teachers and coaches for all aquatic disciplines.  But qualifications are only a small part of the programme of support available for teachers and coaches - the development framework being put in place by the Workforce Development team is all about providing much more than just coach education and a move from an instructional, autocratic approach to the empowerment of coaches which will change their behaviour, not just increase their knowledge.

The role as an Awarding Body

A clear separator exists between the role of the ASA as an Awarding Body and the delivery of training leading to an ASA certificate, which rests with ASA accredited centres. The Institute of Swimming is one of these accredited centres.  The work of the Awarding Body Role includes:

  • Monitoring the standards for the certification of teachers, coaches and tutors
  • Development of qualification specifications including syllabuses, assessment procedures, assessment tools, notional hours
  • Submission of qualification specifications to Ofqual and other appropriate national bodies for inclusion on the QCF (or equivalent)
  • External verification of qualifications/assessments leading to an ASA certification
  • Training, employment, deployment and management of external verifiers
  • Provision of guidance to centres including the process for approval
  • External assessment of learners including the marking of examination papers
  • Administration of learners/qualifications and the issuing of certificates
  • Data reporting and analysis e.g. ethnicity, disability
  • Development of qualification resources including log books
  • Liaison with the skill sector, including employers
  • Self monitoring and self assessment
