British Gas Pools 4 Schools scoops European award
30 November 2010
British Gas Pools 4 Schools has received international recognition by scooping a prize at the prestigious European Sponsorship Awards in Amsterdam.
The scheme, a brainchild of Olympic medallist Steve Parry, offers school children in areas of ‘aquatic deprivation’ the opportunity to learn to swim in an innovative mobile swimming pool.
In July 2010, the scheme achieved its initial target of teaching 10,000 children from diverse backgrounds, communities and lifestyles, to swim.
Holding off competition from Aviva and Barclays, British Gas Pools 4 Schools lifted the Business to Community Award and Parry admitted the prize was a timely recognition of the success of the scheme.
"It’s fantastic to have British Gas Pools 4 Schools be recognised as the best Community programme in the European Sponsorship industry,” said Parry.
"We have delivered more than 150,000 lessons to 15,000 children in 18 months and will continue to demonstrate innovative methods of teaching swimming where no pools exist.
“Without the support of British Gas and the ASA this would simply not have been possible.”
