The ASA is the governing body for the sport in England. In this section you will find all you need to know about joining a club or competing in England and becoming a swimming teacher or coach.

The IoS delivers the ASA’s courses and is a member organisation. Whether you are a teacher, coach, employer or club you will find everything you need to know about qualifications or educating your workforce.

Board Members

Bernard Simkins

Bernard became a member of Stourbridge Swimming Club in the 1960s. His active involvement began when he was asked to join the club committee, and in 1996 he became Fixtures Secretary. He has subsequently held the position of Club Secretary and was Chairman for five years.

In Don’s life outside swimming he was a Design and Development Engineer in various industries with a few British Patents to his name.

Anne learned to swim nearly 60 years ago having joined the Sunderland Ladies Swimming Club and competed in many North East Championships and National Event.

Chris joined the Board for the second time as an Independent member following the reorganisation that created the current board structure. He lives in the Midlands but to maintain his independence he has no connection with the County or Regional governing bodies.

Much of Ray’s working career was spent in the oil industry and from an early date he was required to perform in a supervisory or management capacity.

Ray Gordon

Born in Belfast in 1945, Ray served in the Royal Air Force as an Electronics (Radar) Technician and began teaching at Monkwearmouth School in Sunderland after gaining a degree in Economics and Politics from Newcastle of University.

John Crowther

John was appointed Chairman of the ASA in October 2009 having worked with the ASA on the new HQ project and British Swimming as Chair of the LOC of the FINA World Diving Series event at Sheffield.

David Fletcher

Dave Fletcher has swum all his life, been a member of the ASA for nearly 35 years. As one of the sport’s active volunteers he has experience at club, county and regional levels in his native North East, serving as Vice Chairman of his Club and on the Northumberland and Durham Counties ASA, Yorkshire ASA and North Eastern Counties ASA Executives until relocating to London.
