The ASA is the governing body for the sport in England. In this section you will find all you need to know about joining a club or competing in England and becoming a swimming teacher or coach.

David Fletcher

Dave Fletcher has swum all his life, been a member of the ASA for nearly 35 years. As one of the sport’s active volunteers he has experience at club, county and regional levels in his native North East, serving as Vice Chairman of his Club and on the Northumberland and Durham Counties ASA, Yorkshire ASA and North Eastern Counties ASA Executives until relocating to London.

Nationally, he was first a delegate to ASA Council in 1994, served on the ASA Boundary Commission and was appointed as an independent member of the ASA Board in 2006. He also spent over twenty years as a volunteer member of the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Swimming Committee – much of it as Chairman – until he stepped down in 2010. He continues to be the volunteer BUCS Returning Officer responsible for the electoral process.

Dave is a licensed swimming referee and he has officiated as referee, judge, timekeeper at national and international events held in Great Britain including World University Games, European Championships, Commonwealth Games and World events.

He has also been the announcer at international events in all the aquatics disciplines in Britain and Europe including five European Championships and the 2004 Olympic Games.

Professionally, he is a civil servant with over twenty years’ experience in the Department for Work and Pensions, the Department for Education, Government Office for the North East, the Cabinet Office and their predecessor departments.
