The ASA is the governing body for the sport in England. In this section you will find all you need to know about joining a club or competing in England and becoming a swimming teacher or coach.

The IoS delivers the ASA’s courses and is a member organisation. Whether you are a teacher, coach, employer or club you will find everything you need to know about qualifications or educating your workforce.

Robert Margetts has been a member of the ASA Committee/Board since February 2003 and is now leading the Strategic Development Group for Learn to Swim. His swimming career started as a Youth playing Water Polo for Devon County Juniors and swimming for ESSA Division 13.

He has been a member of Torquay Leander S&LSS most of his life starting as a swimmer and later becoming coach and officer of the club.He has also served on various committees for Devon County, Western Counties now the ASA South West Region and English Schools locally and nationally.

Since 1982 he has been the  Competition Secretary for the West, initially dealing with all disciplines but now only dealing with swimming. He has been involved in the organisation of all ASA National and ESSA held in the West during this period.

He is heavily involved in Swim Torquay, a joint club project to build and run a pool in Torquay; the pool opened in 1977 and has recently benefitted from the ASA Community Pool project. Now a retired school master he had the honour to be ASA President in 2006/07 and is still active in competition swimming organisation and Water Polo refereeing.
