David Haller

July 2011 – Dave Haller, the City of Cardiff head coach, reveals his greatest Olympic disappointment – and how a group of water polo players became his surrogate dads.

The biggest lesson life has taught me is…

To handle disappointments. You are going to have disappointments in anything through your life and you have to pick yourself up and get on with it and not dwell on it. Life is too short to dwell on things. Don’t overanalyse it.

Try and sort it out and never ever try and duck a problem because it gets worse and worse. Resolve it. I remember staying with a Welsh team in Canet-en-Rousillons about 15 years ago and the owner of the hotel said: ‘There are no problems, only solutions’ – and I thought that’s a good attitude. One thing that upsets me is if I make a mess of a golf hole. But I don’t let other things upset me.
