Sean Kelly

January 2012 – Sean Kelly, the Stockport ITC head coach, reveals that he was once hospitalised after being gassed by chlorine in a pool and why he’s the Imelda Marcos of swimming.

I wouldn’t be where I am now without…

my dad, Jack Kelly. He was an all-Ireland 1-metre springboard diving champion and a musician (tenor sax, piano – in fact pretty much everything). He was very interested in swimming and was a swimming teacher. He took me swimming, drove me and Eamonn (my brother) everywhere at all hours and at the same time was trying to run a business that was failing due to repeated robberies. They were very, very tough times. I don’t know how he did it. If he hadn’t got me into swimming, I wouldn’t be doing this now. Thanks, Jack.
