Data protection guidelines for ASA clubs and county associations

3 February 2011

The ASA has produced a guidance document for clubs and county associations on the Data Protection Act 1998 and the responsibilities they have.

The document is entitled ‘The Data Protection Act (1998) and your Club / County Association’ and was launched at the Swimming Conference in October 2010.

Each club will have received a hard copy of the document with their renewals pack but you can download a PDF here.

The Data Protection Act 1998 is a law designed to protect information about ourselves and provides rules for processing personal information.

The Act applies to manual and electronic records and breaches of the Act can lead to organisations being investigated and fined.

All clubs who are affiliated to the ASA are covered by the organisation’s notification to the Information Commissioner and must follow all guidance provided to ensure that personal information is protected.

The guidance document outlines the eight data protection principles that we are required to adhere to and some guidance on what clubs and county associations need to do to comply.

Additional guidance notes will be supplied throughout the year so please keep your eyes peeled for announcements.
