Penny Mordaunt MP calls for Parliamentary aquatics group

18 March 2014

Following her recent Splash! appearance, Swimming Times spoke to MP Penny Mordaunt all about her experience on the diving programme, her support for her local lido and plans to start an all-party Parliamentary group on aquatics.

Read the full interview in the April 2014 issue of Swimming Times out now!"I have had a huge amount of support from colleagues in Parliament and some discussions with some of them about starting up an all-party Parliamentary group on aquatics.

"Splash! has been an amazing experience. I had never dived before. Now it’s all over, I miss it. Our training was incredibly intensive. We had about 20 hours’ training before the live show. At the time it’s pretty tough on your body and very hard work. But it’s a complete adrenaline rush.

"Hilsea Lido in Portsmouth is an amazing 1930s lido that was really suffering from neglect by the local authority and was eventually shut. Everyone wants it back. But they have been struggling and Splash! has really been the catalyst to put some oomph back into that project.

"We have raised over £10,000 from the show. But because of the profile it has given the lido and Tom Daley becoming personally involved in the project, we have also now got more corporate backing, more people helping with lifeguarding and all sorts of companies donating time and money. Tom is coming to Hilsea later this year."
