Swimming stalwarts recognised in New Years honours

Six members of the aquatics community have received MBEs in the 2012 New Year Honours list.

The recipients of the MBEs are:

  • Valerie Mellor: President of Satellites of Macclesfield Swimming Club - for services to swimming in the North West.
  • Mary Maunder: St Joseph’s Parish Swimming Club - for voluntary services to the community in Cardiff.
  • Roger Penfold: President of Reading Swimming Club - for services to the Amateur Swimming Association South East Region and to local government in Berkshire.
  • Alan Urch: Sutton Swimming Club - for services to swimming in Nottinghamshire.
  • Rowena Thomas-Breese: Rhyl Dolpins Swimming Club, multiple World Transplant Games medal winner - for services to disabled swimming and charitable fundraising.
  • Michael Read: Brighton Swimming Club, Olympian, President of of the Channel Swimming Association, 32-time Channel swimmer - for services to swimming.
