Children learn to swim…on holiday!
29 January 2014
Thomas Cook has become an ASA affiliated provider to allow kids to learn to swim while they are enjoying the sun at six of their major resorts this summer 2014.
This will be the first time that Thomas Cook has run an initiative which brings their swim academies in-house, allowing children to learn to be safe and confident in water thanks to an adapted ‘Learn to Swim’ Framework from the ASA.
This means that the lessons provided will be in line with the quality standards set out by the ASA, providing a consistent and comprehensive training course that can be continued at ASA affiliated providers back home in England.
All instructors will be ASA qualified to ensure safety and quality of training is maintained
The version of the ‘Learn to Swim’ framework will be available in six of Thomas Cook’s swim academy locations including the Thomas Cook FamilyWORLD and Airtours Sunstar resorts from July through to August this year.
All instructors will be ASA qualified to ensure safety and quality of training is maintained across each of the swim academies.
This new affiliation could be a major step in helping to improve UK swimming statistics which currently show that only half of children in the country can swim the 25m set out by the National Curriculum.
Spokesperson for Thomas Cook UK & Ireland, Uli Sperl, said: ‘I’m delighted that our partnership with the ASA and Speedo will offer more of our younger guests than ever the chance to learn to swim, with the right equipment in a controlled environment.
‘The art of staying afloat and gaining confidence in the water is a vital skill to learn, and the Learn to Swim Framework will provide kids big and small with an excellent opportunity to meet new friends, while being taught valuable water safety skills, and will only heighten the appeal of our great family offering.’

The ASA’s manageable British Gas Swimfit programme will also be operating at a few of the resorts, which allows parents and adults of all ages maintain their fitness while they are on holiday. The comprehensive five day plan can help with burning off extra calories from the holiday buffet, while also helping to improve stroke technique at the same time.
Swimfit is available at over 200 pools across England, so it gives adults the opportunity to continue their swimming regime even after the holiday is finished.
