MILL HOUSE LEISURE CENTRE ACHIEVE AQUAMARK QUALITY STANDARD
08 Sep 2009
Mill House Leisure Centre in Hartlepool, Cleveland has been recognised by the ASA under their Aquamark accreditation scheme.
Operated by Hartlepool Borough Council, the leisure centre has been in partnership with the ASA since 2006 when they implemented the National Plan for Teaching Swimming alongside the Kellogg’s ASA Awards Scheme.
Aquamark is the ASA’s quality scheme for swimming programmes, designed specifically to help organisations providing swimming programmes improve and enhance the services they offer. Comprising of four modules, operators are assessed on Programme Operation, Staffing, Customer Relations and Policy and Strategy. To achieve the top-level premier status of the accreditation, a lesson provider must pass all four criteria.
Objectives of the scheme include effectively monitoring the implementation of the National Plan for Teaching Swimming, assist the provision of a consistent high standard of service to customers and participants and provide a benchmark to which centres can aspire.
Around 190 children and adults currently access swimming lessons at the centre and benefit from following a pathway of multi skills which help to make them proficient in the water. A structured programme means that swimmers can also develop their interest in other aquatic sports, including a natural progression to Hartlepool Swimming Club for those who wish to compete.
The centre’s Swimming Development Officer Evelyn Lithgow believes that Aquamark will help the centre provide a recognised quality service for swimming lessons with the teachers being valued for their efforts to bring this about. She said: “The ASA guidelines are a framework to work towards and they ensure that everyone is working in unison. Our achievement of the Aquamark quality standard is all due to the hard work and full commitment of the swimming teachers.
“The teachers feel they are assisted and supported when delivering the lessons in an established framework and parents are able to appreciate, through ASA literature, what the teacher is trying to achieve. With this high level of understanding we can develop every swimmer to the best of their ability”.
