SPORT ENGLAND FUND TO INVEST IN PLYMOUTH SPORT FACILITY

20 Oct 2009

Plymouth City Council has been offered a 1.99 million investment from the Sport England Sustainable Facilities Fund towards the development of the Plymouth Life Centre.

The Life Centre, to be located in Plymouth’s Central Park, is to become a fully accessible sporting hub fit for the 21st Century, which will inspire people of all ages and ability to take part in sport.

The facility will include a 10-lane, 50 metre swimming pool with moveable floors and booms allowing for flexible use. A leisure pool will also be integrated to encourage the whole family to swim, it will include flumes, a bubble pool and ‘beach-style’ entry.

The Life Centre will become one of the top four diving facilities in the country, also offering a moveable floor so it can be used as a standard pool. A dryside training facility for competitive divers and other sportspeople will be incorporated; to include trampolines, springboards, harnesses, crashmats and other specialist equipment.

The Sport England Sustainable Facilities Fund invests £10m a year of Lottery and Exchequer money into innovative projects capable of transforming the places where people access and participate in sports. The programme was launched to encourage multi-sport developments that are viable in the long term, delivered through partnerships between public, private and commercial organisations.

Sport England received 69 applications requesting £42 million of investment from the £10 million fund. They have committed to investing in seven projects that offered the best value for money in delivering the fund’s priorities and contributing to the growth and sustained participation in community sport.
