6 January 2017
Charitable Social Enterprise GLL has announced it will invest over £5 million to support UK athletes within the Tokyo cycle through its athlete support programme, the GLL Sport Foundation.
GLL is the UKs largest leisure operator and leading Social Enterprise, and operates across a network of 61 areas. Athletes within this network are eligible to apply for the programme
Supported athletes will be able to access financial support, training membership support to Better leisure centres, and also sport science and physiotherapy programmes.
Last year 374 aquatics athletes from across the UK were supported by the GLL Sport Foundation. This included ParalympicsGB gold medallist Susie Rodgers, who was also awarded an MBE in the New Year Honours list. Another supported ambassador is Team GB diver Tom Daley who achieved bronze in Rio.
Susie has been supported through the GLL Sport Foundation since 2010 and explained how the programme has helped throughou her sporting career: “I have been supported by GLL now for over five years and I continue to be very grateful for their support on my journey as a para-swimmer. The funding enables me to access venues to train, injury rehabilitation and support towards my sporting costs.”
GLL Sport Foundation Patron Sally Gunnell explains the role the programme has to play: “The support from the GLL Sport Foundation is essential for young athletes, and can sometimes be the difference between being talented, and taking the sport up to the elite level. I have experienced first hand the financial struggle of being on the fringes of elite sport, and support programmes such as the GLL Sport Foundation relieves some of the burden so that more time can be spent on performing at the highest level possible.”
- Applications for the programme are open until 20 February 2017. Find out more on www.gllsportfoundation.org
