15 August 2011

British Swimming and the ASA are mourning former ASA board member and water polo stalwart Roger Hargreaves who passed away on 12 August 2011, aged 72.

Roger was a mainstay of ASA administration for more than 30 years, taking up his first ASA role with the Midland District in 1979.

He went on to be West Midlands Regional representative on the ASA Committee from 2005 to 2009 and was serving ASA Rules Committee Secretary, having originally taken up the role in 1998.

Roger was best known for his work within water polo, having occupied a number of positions in the administration of the National Water Polo League including Match Secretary from 1966 to 1975, General Secretary from 1976 to 1982, and Treasurer from 1977 to 1978.

As well as playing for more than 40 years and refereeing at both the European Championships and World Masters Championships, Roger was a member of the ASA Technical Water Polo Committee for 19 years and received the Swimming Times Water Polo Award following his retirement from the Committee.

Roger also received the ASA's prestigious Harold Fern Award in 2004 for his outstanding contribution to aquatic sports.

I will remember Roger as a rough tough senior player when I first started out as a player in Birmingham.  He has done so much for the game in his various roles with the ASA and was one hell of a ref too.
    My condolencies to his family.
    He will be greatly missed.

In my capacities as a player, a coach and committee member I had many dealings with Roger. His knowledge, understanding and ability to simplify ASA structure and law (which still remains a baffling maze to my simple mind!) never ceased to amaze me. He has my ongoing respect

His overall contribution to our sport and incredible time commitment means that there will be a huge void to fill.

Our condolencies, sympathies and thanks to his family.

I worked with Roger for the Midland District League for a number years. Roger always offered sound advice, support and fairness. Many of us enjoyed playing and refereeing with him. He will be sadly missed. We offer our sympathies and love to his family.

Roger was a massive help to those of us who pioneered water polo for women in the 1980s…he helped us find our way through committees and came on many trips as referee and as team manager to the City of Coventry womens team.

So many great stories and fond memories…he will be greatly missed.
