16 Oct 2009

West Midlands region swimming stalwart John Russell has been elected as the 118th President of the ASA.

Russell takes over from the retiring president Kay Grimshaw for the period from October 2009 to October 2010, bringing with him a wealth of experience.

Russell first became involved in swimming when stationed in Singapore during 1967-69n whilst serving in the army. On his return to the UK he joined his local swimming club in Stratford-upon-Avon and it did not take long before he was helping on poolside as a qualified ASA teacher and later as a swimming referee. Russell was elected to the post of Warwickshire ASA President in 1992, becoming Midland District President in 2003.

In accepting the position of ASA President Russell thanked Alan Bartlett, who had been the West Midland region’s original nomination for President before being taken ill earlier in the year. Russell said: “I would like to pay tribute to the work of Alan as well as thank him for his help, advice and unstinting support despite what must have been a tremendous disappointment for him.”

Russell also paid tribute to the “tireless” work of outgoing President Kay Grinshaw who he said had been “an inspiration to the many members and children she has met on her travels.”
