YOUNG SWIMMING TALENT TO COMPETE AT UK SCHOOL GAMES
03 Sep 2009
Some of the UK’s brightest sporting talent will be on display in Wales as the 2009 UK School Games gets under way today.
Swimming is one of ten sports taking place at the annual event and will feature over 200 elite school-age swimmers. They will be competing with one of the eight teams representing England North, England Central, England East, England South, Scotland North & West, Scotland South & East, Ireland and Wales.
The 2008 Games saw England Central take the swimming title with 256.5 points.
The events in the pool will feature prominently on the UK School Games roster, with two days of competition (Friday 4th – Saturday 5th) taking place at the Wales National Pool in Swansea.
Matthew Johnson, star of this year’s British Gas ASA National Age Group Championships, will be looking to boost England North’s medal tally after his good form saw him take home ten gold medals from Sheffield.
Record numbers are competing in Swansea, Cardiff and Newport this year, where the new sport of track cycling will join competition in hockey, badminton, judo, volleyball, athletics, fencing, gymnastics, swimming and table tennis, with disability events in athletics, swimming and table tennis also included.
