The ASA is dismayed to learn of yet further delays in the building of a 50m pool in Birmingham – this is Swimming’s number one priority.

David Sparkes, the Chief Executive of the ASA, said it’s a national disgrace that Britain’s second city still does not have a 50m pool linked to a co-ordinated sports strategy.

He calls upon the political leadership in Birmingham to address the need for a 50m pool now and a find a way of delivering this facility before the London Olympics as promised.

“We all recognise that the council’s finances are under threat but swimming has demonstrated that it has the capacity to build social cohesion and healthier communities.

“Birmingham has long claimed to be Britain’s city of sport, now we call upon the council’s political leaders to step out from the shadows and deliver their community this much needed facility.

"The West Midlands ranks bottom of the swimming provision league. It’s not surprising that swimming participation in the West Midlands also lags at the bottom of the British league table.

“It is now time for Birmingham to take decisive action.”
