David Cameron pledges further primary school sport funding

6 February 2014

The ASA welcomes the announcement by David Cameron today that an additional £150m a year will be made available to primary schools to fund sports until 2020 if the Conservatives are re-elected.

Downing Street said the money would help secure the Olympic and Paralympic legacy.

The ASA proactively supports schools in bringing swimming to the forefront of the curriculum, particularly given the worrying statistics released in 2013 that over half of school children aged seven – 11 years in the UK cannot swim 25 metres unaided.

This news of potential further funding support will give schools the opportunity to review and improve their current school swimming programme, to ensure that every single child learns this essential life skill.
