Successful pilot study for school swimming
The ASA has been working with Leed Metropolitan University on a pilot study to offer PGCE students the chance to also complete National Curriculum Training Programme (NCTP) as part of their studies, so that they have a swimming teaching qualification on graduation of their university course.
The NCTP is funded by the Department for Education and every year around 6,000 teachers go through the training at venues across the country. The programme is open to anyone involved in primary school swimming e.g. school teacher, classroom assistant, learning support staff, nursery nurse, etc., as well as students involved in initial teacher training.
The pilot explored one simple idea, that if the NCTP could become part of PGCE training, a new generation of teachers would have the basic skills necessary to teach school swimming and the continuation of the existing NCTP courses could then focus on teachers and support staff already working in schools.
