Host of Olympians join Paralympic star Ellie Simmonds to take on British Gas SwimBritain

Double Paralympic Champion Ellie Simmonds will be joined by a host of Olympians at Coventry Sports Centre on the 31st August, to team up with members of the public and take on British Gas SwimBritain.

Triple Olympian Ross Davenport, seven-time British Championships gold medallist Joe Roebuck and London 2012 Olympian Amy Smith will be taking to the water alongside four-time Paralympic gold medallist Ellie Simmonds this August, it was announced today.

Supported by a crop of swimming stars including Ellie, Becky Adlington and Michael Jamieson, SwimBritain aims to encourage 500,000 more people to swim regularly by 2015 with the first-ever team relay event.

The swim stars and their teammates will each swim 1km in four 250m legs.

Amy Smith, fresh from competing at the 2013 FINA World Championships in Barcelona this summer, said:

“I love the thrill of competing but swimming isn’t just about elite sport; all ages and abilities can feel the benefits of swimming and that’s why I’m getting stuck in with SwimBritain Coventry.

“A half-hour gentle swim can burn more than 200 calories and by doing the challenge as a team, it gives you the motivation to reach your goal. It’s going to be a really exciting day and I can’t wait to get in the water with all the teams taking part.”

With a SwimBritain challenge for teams of adults and for families, it will make a great day out to mark the end of the summer holidays and inspire people from across the Midlands to get back in the pool.

SwimBritain is a four-person relay for adults where each team member swims 250m four times around a specially-designed course in Coventry Sports Centre’s 50m pool. Little SwimBritain is designed for families with children in mind, in which team members use the same course, swimming half the distance (125m four times).

Spaces for British Gas SwimBritain are limited, so don’t miss this chance to get together with your family and friends, form a team and go the distance – SwimBritain will be on-hand to support you every step of the way.
