Prestigious new diploma developed by the ASA and Water Babies

05 April 2013

Twelve outstanding swimming teachers have become the first to gain the ASA Level 2 Extended Diploma in Coaching Learn to Swim.

This prestigious new national diploma was developed by the ASA and Water Babies, the world’s largest baby and toddler swim school.

Approved by SkillsActive and accredited by Ofqual, the qualification was launched through the ASA’s premier training provider, the IoS. The diploma consolidates years of learning into one qualification, with specific focus on child development, child protection, parent feedback and the innovative delivery of swimming lessons.

Ensuring high quality, specialist training for swimming teachers across the Water Babies national franchise, the qualification will encourage teachers to advance their skills and knowledge to a world class level. Steve Franks, Managing Director of Water Babies, said, “The term ‘world class’ is frequently used when referring to the fantastic work of our swimming teachers, and now we have a world class qualification to back this statement up. We look forward to this qualification setting a benchmark standard across the industry.

“We are proud of our unique and collaborative partnership with the ASA and IoS, who have demonstrated true leadership and outstanding performance in their determination to meet our expectations as a leading growth business in the aquatic industry.”

Swimming is the perfect exercise for babies and young children, as the water allows a baby's muscles to move freely without constraints of gravity. Regular exercise plays a vital role in babies’ development, with every movement helping to strengthen their brain for new learning. Water Babies employs over 350 swimming teachers to teach 30,000 babies each week from birth upwards, using the British Gas ASA Learn to Swim Pathway, the national syllabus to assist and support the delivery of swimming lessons.

Kelly Gaffney, National Programmes and Partnership Manager for IoS Training and the ASA, said, “The Diploma will allow both existing and new Water Babies teachers to take ownership and responsibility for leading the industry and being world class in their field. We are extremely proud to be the premier provider of this qualification to the Water Babies network, working in partnership to support their learners along their pathway to success.”
