Reward your disabled swimmers with Alpha Steps

10 July 2013

Many children with disabilities or additional needs enjoy learning to swim with their peers as part of mainstream lessons.  However it can sometimes take them a lot longer to achieve the early stages of the British Gas ASA Learn to Swim Pathway which can affect their motivation.

Alpha Step AwardsSwimming teachers and learn to swim providers can give disabled children a real sense of achievement by offering a specially designed set of awards to boost confidence during the early stages of buoyancy, co-ordination, safe entries and exits, spatial awareness and aquatic breathing.

A series of three certificates and badges, the Alpha Step Awards have been created to maximise the potential and enjoyment of all swimmers.  They provide small stepping stones for those individuals who need additional support and are particularly relevant for those with disabilities.  They are also suitable for shy or timid children or even adults who are lacking in confidence or who are very tentative about learning to swim.

Covering basic water confidence and aquatic skills, once the swimmer has mastered all three Alpha Steps they should be able to progress smoothly onto Learn to Swim Stage 1.
