SWIMMING VOLUNTEERS RECOGNISED IN NATIONAL AWARDS

28 Oct 2009

Two volunteers have been recognised for their work within swimming by winning prestigious Torch Trophy Trust awards.

The winners from the aquatic community include Maggie Hargraves from Colchester Phoenix ASC and Brian Dent from Sherwood Colliery Swimming Club.

Hargraves won the award for her tireless work as coach and secretary at Colchester Phoenix, a club for disabled swimmers which she played a key role in forming in 1993. She campaigns endlessly for disabled people to take to the water and works tirelessly to ensure that they are given the same training opportunities as able-bodied swimmers.

Dent received his award for dedication to Sherwood Colliery SC where he has been involved for 64 years, performing a number of roles within the club including Club Chairman. He is a qualified official and regularly helps out at the club championships. For 40 years he has taught swimming every night of the week, as well as attending galas at weekends.

Both volunteers will receive their awards at a ceremony in London to be held on 16th November.

The Torch Trophy Trust is a charitable organisation whose main aim is to encourage voluntary work in sport and other related outdoor activities within local communities. The Torch Trophy Trust has its origins in the 1948 Olympics held in London. Following the Games, the Torch designed for the last leg of the Relay into Wembley Stadium was presented to the Trust.

The Trust provides small Bursaries to assist volunteers in sport and presents Awards to individuals who have been identified as making an outstanding contribution as a volunteer in their chosen sport.
