Can you learn to swim by playing games?

The answer is yes!

Gwenda Lappin of the Bulmershe School Sport Partnership in Berkshire decided to try something different this year with her School Swimming Improvement Programme students. Gwenda challenged her swimming instructors to teach a group of non-swimming students using Aquasplash for a week and the results were astonishing!

Aquasplash is a fun water festival for anyone aged seven to 11 years. Noodle races, float challenges, log rolls, bombing and caterpillar ball games are just a few of the laughs to be had. Aquasplash is for everyone regardless of ability or disability.

The swimming instructors of Bulmershe Leisure Centre played selected games from the Aquasplash resource pack and created some of their own.  For half an hour each day these nervous non swimming children – some visibly shaking with fear at the start of the week - played games in the water. They did not realise that they were learning to swim.

Teaching assistants were left “amazed”.  Children with special educational needs and behavioural challenges, who needed one to one support back at school, were engaged and learning to swim.

The transformation by the end of the week was incredible with children now swimming.  The look of sheer amazement on one little girl’s face was unforgettable.  She stood up from playing ‘Simon Says’ and turned to her teachers shouting at the top of her voice: “I can swim, look look I can swim!”

Want to find out more?

Schools and clubs should visit the Aquasplash website at www.aquasplashfest.org to find out more about running a festival, get great ideas for water-based games and promotional resources and let the fun begin!

Parents and children should speak to their school about the possibility of taking part in Aquasplash.
