The ASA is the governing body for the sport in England. In this section you will find all you need to know about joining a club or competing in England and becoming a swimming teacher or coach.

The IoS delivers the ASA’s courses and is a member organisation. Whether you are a teacher, coach, employer or club you will find everything you need to know about qualifications or educating your workforce.

Forms required for an initial or renewal of license

To apply for a teacher/coach license we require four main documents:

  1. Initial application form
  2. Evidence of your ASA qualification- if not completed through the ASA you would have needed to apply for exemption to attend an ASA qualification or apply for RPL
  3. CRB (if done through the ASA must have been issued within the last 3 years, if done through another organisation we need to see the original document along with a CRB consent form, this must have been issued within the last 6 months). If you need to gain a CRB please contact CRB@swimming.org
  4. Child Protection Certificate (if done through the ASA or Sports Coach UK a copy of the certificate can be sent in, if done through your local authority we must see the original certificate. All certifictaes must have been issued within the last 3 years). Please click here to see what child protection certificates the ASA accept.  Your license will be sent to you by post in the form of an official ASA teacher/coach license card which will be valid for 3 years from the date of issue. However, we must receive a completed annual return proforma, signed by your line manager/head coach and returned to us annually. This proforma explains the yearly expectations of being licensed.
