Go Swimming has everything you need to know about swimming. If you are a parent, a non swimmer or just want to improve your technique this is the section for you.

In British Swimming you will find information about the world of high performance sport, including the disciplines of Swimming, Diving, Synchronised Swimming, Water Polo and Para-Swimming.

The ASA is the governing body for the sport in England. In this section you will find all you need to know about joining a club or competing in England and becoming a swimming teacher or coach.

The IoS delivers the ASA’s courses and is a member organisation. Whether you are a teacher, coach, employer or club you will find everything you need to know about qualifications or educating your workforce.

The levels of ASA qualification

If you’ve made the decision to train to be a swimming teacher or coach then you need to choose a discipline and work through the levels.

Qualifications are currently offered at levels 1, 2 and 3 on the qualifications and credit framework (QCF) and are mapped to the National Occupational Standards (NOS).

They include: Teaching Aquatics, Aqua Fit and Disabilities plus Coaching Diving, Coaching Swimming, Coaching Synchronised Swimming and Coaching Water Polo.

Level 1

The first qualification you require for any discipline is the ASA Level 1 Award.  If successful at Level 1 you can then proceed to Level 2.  Both these levels focus on ‘how to teach/ coach’ and ‘what to teach/coach’.  The holder of an ASA Level 1 Award is qualified to teach/coach in a support role only. You will be able to actively support a more senior qualified or licensed teacher/coach at any level, in the delivery of a pre-prepared session.

(must be 16 years of age upon course completion)

Level 2

To work on your own without supervision (other than lifeguarding cover) you will be required to hold an ASA Level 2 Certificate.  The holder of the ASA Level 2 Certificate will provide and equip you, with the skills, knowledge, tools and techniques to effectively plan, prepare, deliver, monitor and evaluate teacher/coaching sessions.

Entry age: 17 years +
(must be 17 years of age before or on the course commencement date)
Entry Requirements:

Learners must be holders of either:

  • ASA UKCC L1Award in a specific discipline (QCF)- January 2011 onwards
  •  ASA UKCC L1 Certificate in a specific discipline- 2006-2010
  • L1 Certificate for Teaching Swimming post 2002 plus ASA UKCC L1 Award, units 105-107 or L1 Unit 2 in a specific discipline
  • ASA Assistant Teacher Certificate in a specific discipline post Sept 1994

OR

  • Gained exemption prior to enrolment on the learning programme from the ASA

Level 3 and beyond

If you are interested in the coaching programme in a competitive environment, the ASA Level 3 Certificate is the route to becoming a senior coach.  It will enable you to plan, implement, analyse and revise annual coaching programmes to really get the most out of your athletes.  You will be able to manage and lead appropriate physical and human resources to support all areas of the club programme.

Qualification: ASA UKCC Level 3 Certificate in Coaching Swimming
Entry age: 18 years +
(must be 18 years of age before or on the course commencement date)
Entry Requirements:

Learners must be holders of either:

  • ASA UKCC L2 Award in a Coaching Swimming (QCF)
  • ASA L2 Certificate in a Coaching Swimming (NQF- pre 2011)
  • L2 Certificate for Teaching Swimming (units 1-4) (2000-2007) plus CV containing coaching experience and references
  • ASA Assistant Teacher Certificate (Specific Discipline) prior to Sept 1994 plus CV containing coaching experience and references.

and

  • Link to a Swim 21 Club

OR

  • Gained exemption prior to enrolment on the learning programme from the ASA.It is recommended that learners hold a valid CRB certificate
