I have been involved in swimming in one form or another for the past 11 years. I started off as a swimmer with Retford Swimming Club, later becoming Club Captain. I also started to teach in the small pool for Retford and I took my Level 1 teaching course. I took my Level 2 teaching course when the opportunity came to teach on the Learn-to-swim programme at my local Leisure Centre. At the time of the course, I was 17, which made me one of the youngest people to achieve this qualification in the country.
Before I left for university I coached various abilities in RSC from Learn-to-swim through to Regional and National standard swimmers, and I continue to work with these swimmers during university breaks. I am currently studying Sport Management at Coventry University and will start coaching with the City of Coventry Swimming Club soon.
In 2009, I also volunteered for a week at the national Age Group Championships, where I worked in the biogs department, which consisted of me updating the swimmers PB’s and producing start lists for all the finals. Last season, I worked as a coach with the Bassetlaw Nova Squad, where I helped coach the B and development squads. This experience allowed me to complete my Level 2 Coaching qualification and I am currently completing my Level 3 Coaching qualification and will hopefully pass during the summer. I also had the chance in my gap year to sit on Retford Swimming Club’s Executive Committee as an Executive Officer which helped me understand how the club is run on a week-by-week basis.
