03 Sep 2012
Do you want to develop your school workforce to support the delivery of the School Games?
Do you want to set up an Aquatic Youth Club but need the people power to do it?
Do you to volunteer within your school?
The Young Aquatic Leader Certificate (YALC) is a dynamic, skill building, sport specific leadership course aimed to develop young aquatic leaders and provide them with the knowledge to actively volunteer in an aquatic environment.
The training is aimed at 14 – 19 year olds and will support the development of the young leader’s knowledge across the aquatic disciplines. The YALC is even suitable for young leaders with no prior knowledge of aquatics and will challenge them to work within a team, step outside of their boundaries and will develop communication, organisation, leadership and planning skills through interactive activities and problem solving.
The YALC consists of a 6 hour interactive theory session followed by a 2 hour practical. The course can be delivered over a chosen time frame to suit the provider. The YALC can be delivered by clubs, schools and organisations wishing to develop their young aquatic workforce.
The course covers:
- An introduction to Timekeeping in Swimming
- An introduction to Officiating in Water Polo
- Running an Aquatic Youth Club
- Running an Aquatic Competition
The Young Aquatic Leader Certificate costs £6.00 per candidate; the deliverer will be invoiced by the IOS. Candidates will receive a CPD course certificate upon completion.
Please note: Young leaders undertaking the YALC will not be qualified to officiate at ASA or British Swimming events. The course is an introduction which aims to equip young leaders with the skills for a school based aquatic environment. Candidates will still be required to take the relevant officiating qualifications as stated by each aquatic discipline should they wish to become a qualified British swimming Official. For more information on how to becoming a British Swimming official please click here.
How do I organise a course?
If you would like to run the Young Aquatic Leader Certificate, click here to download an application form. Completed forms should be returned to Lorraine.dean@swimming.org or posted to Lorraine Dean, IOS, SportPark, Pavilion 3, 3 Oakwood Drive, Loughborough, LE11 3QF.
In order to deliver the course, you need to have experience of delivering to groups of young leaders, and you will need to complete the YALC presenter guide prior to delivery.
What is the YALC Presenter Guide?
The YALC presenter guide is a 60 minute E-learning module which must be completed by all presenters wishing to deliver the course. Designed to support those who do not have prior aquatics knowledge and to enhance those that do, the module provides a detailed overview of the course material, advice and support in reference to delivery methods and styles, along with all of the information you will need to enable you to organise your own course. The guide will equip you with the knowledge and skills required to deliver the YALC to young leaders. Further information on how to access the presenter guide will be available upon receipt of the course registration form.
Once the course has been registered, presenters will receive the course PowerPoint and delivery notes, along with the course handouts which can be printed for the learners. You will also receive an attendance register which must be completed and returned to the IOS upon course completion.
Should you require assistance with a course presenter, or if you have any other course related queries please contact volunteering@swimming.org
