Laura Cotton
Aged 20
After learning how to swim at the age of 5, I moved into competitive swimming at Deben Swimming Club when I was 9 years old.

After 5 years I began volunteering with the disability squad within the club and then also taught and coached for the club. Since then I have qualified as a Lifeguard, Level 2 teacher and a Level 1 coach with the hope this year to complete my Level 2 coaching. I have now been teaching / coaching for 6 years.
I am currently in my 3rd year of 4 studying to become a primary school teacher and am based at Lancaster City Swimming and Water Polo Club where I am Squad Coach. I am actively involved in swimming from Learn to Swim right through to Regional Level Competition.
In 2008 I was awarded the Aquaforce Young Volunteer of the year award at Regional Level and later that year also won the National award. It was amazing to be recognised for the work I put in, but for me I believe that what I do is always about the swimmers. I wouldn’t have the opportunity to do what I do if there were no swimmers, and seeing them progress and achieve is the best recognition a teacher or coach can have.
