Caleb Hughes and Ellena Jones win 3km Open Water titles

Caleb Hughes Open Water

Caleb Hughes and Ellena Jones were crowned king and queen of the open water with victories in the 17/18 Yrs 3km races respectively.

Hughes took to the front early in the boys’ race and showed his class to remain at the head of the leading pack throughout, eventually winning in 31:58.02.

The 18-year old Hatfield swimmer will now go to compete at the European Championships in Berlin.

Swansea Aquatics swimmer Jones had only recently returned from competing for Wales at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games but carried on her form at Rother Valley, rushing to the front of the field at the start before powering clear in the final 150m to finish more than seven seconds ahead of Windsor’s silver medallist Lucinda Campbell.

There were also gold medals for Tom Millburn (Cockermouth) and Harriet Rothwell (Ellesmere College) in the boys and girls 2km races for the 15/16 Yrs Age Group.
