06 May 2011
The BBC will broadcast live coverage of the British Gas Great Salford Swim on Sunday 15th May. Matt Baker will be joined by five-time Olympic gold medallist Ian Thorpe as Salford Quays plays host to the second staging of the event following its successful debut last year.
In a celebration of all things swimming the one-mile open water contest promises spectacular live action at a unique venue.
Two thousand competitors braved cold conditions last year to participate and this year’s event is even bigger with many inspirational swimmers raising money for good causes.
They are joined by world champion Keri-anne Payne and fellow Olympic medallists Cassie Patten and David Davies, plus a host of famous faces from the worlds of sport and show business.
The course features a unique ‘Dock to Dock’ lay-out, which starts in Dock 9 near The Lowry, traverses Mariners Canal and finishes in Dock 8 beside Salford Watersports Centre.
The Baggage Drop and pre-swim Changing marquees are based in the Event Village within the MediaCityUK Public Realm (150m from the Start) with the Baggage Reclaim and post-swim Changing marquees at the Finish area.
Spectators will be able to walk along the dockside following swimmers around the one mile course with a shorter spectator route available if required.
The Great Salford Swim also provides a springboard for the launch of the Big Splash, the BBC’s sport participation campaign designed to inspire British people of all standards and abilities to take to the water.
The Big Splash: Great Salford Swim is on BBC Two on Sunday 15th May from 2pm – 3.30pm.
