Have fun in the pool and celebrate National Family Week

01 June 2011

A survey of parents announced this week shows that families in the UK are spending less and less time together as a family.

The results of a study by National Family Week, the largest annual celebration of families and family life in the UK,  have revealed that in total the typical family in Britain spends less than two and a half hours of quality time together in an average week, compared to over four hours a week in 2010.

Lara Lill, Head of Health & Participation at the ASA, said, “It’s easy to let daily chores and errands get in the way, but it’s so important to maintain the precious time we have together as a family.  Research has also shown that 1 in 3 kids say swimming is their favourite family activity, so National Family Week is a great opportunity to get down to your local pool and have some fun.”

Lara continued, “As well as being great fun for parents and kids alike, around 13 million people in Britain swim regularly, making it the biggest participation sport in the country.  It’s also fantastic for health and fitness – for example, just half an hour, once a week can improve your fitness significantly.”

With 5000 pools in England, swimming is one of the most accessible forms of exercise and can be done by anyone, regardless of their age, weight, background or ability.  Families can track down their nearest pool and join in with the UK’s largest ever swimming campaign, the Big Splash, presented by British Gas at www.bigsplash.co.uk.
