Olympic legend Spitz backs Big Splash Mile

16 November 2011

Olympic swimming legend Mark Spitz has pledged his support for the Big Splash Mile for Sport Relief, insisting the event is a great idea!

The Big Splash Mile for Sport Relief is a great idea - to have anybody participate in an activity which has positive influence on them and others is fantastic.

Spitz, who made his Big Splash at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games when he scooped a massive seven gold medals, admitted the event is an ideal way for people to benefit from swimming.

“I think the Big Splash Mile for Sport Relief is a great idea," said Spitz.

"To have anybody participate in an activity which has positive influence on them and others is great."

Talking about the training programmes that will be available from January 2012 for swimmers to train for the Big Splash Mile, he said: “Nobody is going to swim a mile if they don’t know how to swim, but there are going to be programmes for people to build up to a model so that they can learn how to swim and enable themselves to have a good go at it.”

He went on to say swimmers should take part together with their friends and encourage each other, as it is an event that people will get a lot out of.

The Olympic hero, who set 33 records during his professional career, shows his support in this video about the Big Splash Mile for Sport Relief.

The Big Splash Mile for Sport Relief will take place on 27 to 29 April as part of the Swimathon Weekend 2012 being hosted at over 600 pools across the UK.

Swimmers can take part either individually or as a team in the Big Splash Mile for Sport Relief or the 2.5k, 5k and 5k team distance challenges for Marie Curie Cancer Care.  You can register your interest today in the Swimathon Weekend.

In January 2012, swimmers will be able to officially register for the event and have access to training programmes provided by British Gas Swimfit.
