Champs Event Factoids

  1. British Championships in its current format (of a mid-season ‘trials’) was first held in 2001 at the Manchester Aquatics Centre
  2. 2012 is the first time it will be held away from Manchester Aquatic Centre (it has hosted the event five times) or Ponds Forge International Sports Centre (it has hosted the event six times)
  3. Multi-classification Disability events were first integrated into the British Championships in 2003
  4. The last disability world record set at the event was Jonathan Fox’s time of 1:10.70 in the heats of the MC 100m Backstroke at the 2011 Championships in Manchester. It was an S7 world record.
  5. The last able-bodied world set at the event was Jo Jackson’s time of 4:00.66 in the 400m Freestyle final at the 2009 Championships in Sheffield.

Champs Athlete Records:

  1. Rebecca Adlington has failed to finish first in just one final since 2006 – the 400m Freestyle final in 2009 where she was beaten by 0.23 seconds by Jo Jackson with both swimmers ducking under the world record.
  2. Fran Halsall hasn’t been beaten in a 50m Freestyle final at the Champs since taking the title for the first time in 2005.
  3. Ellen Gandy’s talent was evident from a young age – she won her first Champs medal as 13-year old with 200m Butterfly bronze in 2005.
  4. Michael Rock has won the 100m and 200m Butterfly double for the past four consecutive years.
  5. James Goddard has competed in – and won medals at – every staging of the Champs except for the 2007 event when he was competing at the World Championships in Melbourne.
  6. Hannah Miley has won the 200m and 400m Individual Medley double for the past five consecutive years
