Mixed emotions for Roberts ahead of competitive return
21st November 2011
Dave Roberts admitted to mixed emotions ahead of his return to action at this weekend’s DSE National Short Course Championships at Ponds Forge, Sheffield.
The 11-time Paralympic champion will compete in his first national competition since an eight-month tricep injury put paid to his hopes of a starring role at last season’s IPC Swimming European Championships in Berlin.
I’m both nervous and excited to be back swimming competitively.
With a line-up also featuring the likes of Eleanor Simmonds, Sascha Kindred and Liz Johnson, competition is guaranteed to be fierce as the best in British disability swimming look to lay down an early marker in the Paralympic season.
And Roberts insists he’s taking nothing for granted as he looks to continue his recovery in Sheffield.
“I’m both nervous and excited to be back swimming competitively,” said Roberts.
“Although I haven’t completely finished my rehab, this event is a swim through meet where I can put in some sprint training. I always enjoy the Short Course so I’m happy to be back.
“I’ll always come back to DSE championships- even if it’s as a volunteer. They’ve been a big part of my career so I want to give something back.”
The DSE National Short Course Championships, sponsored by Nationwide, takes place at Ponds Forge from 26 – 27 November.
