Scottish record for Miley in Poland

10th December 2011

Hannah Miley found herself inches away from a surprise medal in the 400m Freestyle after a sizzling Scottish record at the European Short Course Championships in Sczcecin, Poland.

The Scottish swimmer is the first to admit she usually uses the race as a 'fun' event to prepare for her favoured 400m Individual Medley.

But having broken the Scottish record initially in the heats with her time of 4:04.46, Miley went nearly three seconds better in the final, touching fifth in 4:01.46 - just 1.16 seconds off Spain's bronze medallist Melanie Costa Schmid.

And Miley admitted she had been spending time in the training pool trying to improve her distance freestyle.

"I've always had a few problems with the 400 Free and I've really tried to work hard on it," said Miley.

"It's a bit of a fun event for me so I come into it really relaxed but I'm so happy with that time.

"I wasn't expecting anything. It was just a case of go in, enjoy it and get the best time I can - and I've done that."
