13th February 2012

Lizzie Simmonds laid down an intimidating marker ahead of the British Gas Swimming Championships with an impressive 200m Backstroke performance at the BUCS Championships in Sheffield.

The European champion clocked 2:07.92 at Ponds Forge, sailing under her 2:08.76 effort from last summer’s World Championship final in Shanghai.

Simmonds’ time would have won last year’s British Gas Swimming Championship final by more than a second and elevated her to fifth in Shanghai.

It also puts her in good stead as she looks to qualify for London 2012 at next month’s British Gas Swimming Championships with British record holder Gemma Spofforth the only other British woman in history to have swum sub-2:08.

Simmonds also tested her sprinting in Sheffield, clocking 29.00 to finish fastest in the 50m Backstroke heats.

“Pleased with my swims today, nice to end with a very respectable 200,” said Simmonds on Twitter.
