My London date with rival after a rewarding summer

4th October 2011 - Aberdeen Press & Journal

It has been quite a spectacular couple of months in the pool for me and if I ever get the chance to write a book about my career it would make quite an intriguing chapter or two.

Nothing is straightforward when you have a World Championships and it was such a huge shock to come away with a silver medal in the 400m Medley in Shanghai - a mixture of shock and relief.

It was so exciting to be standing up on the podium and hopefully it bodes well for the Olympics

In the 2009 World Championships I missed out on a medal in the 400m Medley to Australian Stephanie Rice by about 0.4 secs. But now all the hard work I put in is totally worth it after my performances in the Far East.

It was so exciting and quite unexpected to be standing up on the podium but hopefully it bodes well for the Olympics next year in London.

In the World Championships the year before the Olympics, you race against the same people you will face, in this case, at London 2012.

What a scalp or two I claimed.

It was a big coup for me and now I can say I have beaten her once.

In particular to get one over Stephanie - that was incredible. She is such a talented athlete, a three-time Olympic gold medallist, and that was a big coup for me and now I can say I have beaten her once.

She has something to prove now in London and it was great to have won - it is going to be a great challenge competing against her next year.

After coming back from Shanghai, I spent a couple of days in Sheffield. I also had a photo shoot in London then I went to Dubai with my brother Alistair.

We went to a water park a couple of times, swam with dolphins and did a sand dune safari ride and it was just a really nice experience.
