30th June 2013
Jazz Carlin closed in on her third title of the 2013 British Gas Swimming Championships as she qualified fastest for the 400m Freestyle on the final day at Ponds Forge.
The Swansea ITC swimmer – who has already lifted 800m and 1500m Freestyle golds in Sheffield with Welsh records in both – won her heat in 4:13.21 to seal lane four for tonight’s final.
Carlin will have this week’s 200m Freestyle champion Eleanor Faulkner for company after the City of Sheffield swimmer qualified third fastest in 4:13.84 while Hannah Miley was second through in 4:13.48.
Warrender’s Dan Wallace qualified fastest for tonight’s men’s 400m Individual Medley final, setting a personal best 4:17.61 to win his heat.
The Scot – who won 200m Individual Medley bronze in a Scottish record on day four in Sheffield – is in good form over the long medley, having won bronze in the prestigious NCAA Championships in USA this season.
But Wallace will have to overcome Roberto Pavoni in the final, the Loughborough ITC swimmer – who has won the British 400m IM title for the past three years – qualifying second fastest in 4:18.50.
Stockport Metro’s Lauren Quigley will aim to add the 50m Backstroke title to her 100m Back crown from day four, having qualified fastest for tonight’s semi-finals in 28.75.
City of Manchester’s Jessica Fullalove was second through in 28.94 while Swansea ITC’s Georgia Davies clocked 28.96 to win her heat and progress in third.
Finally, Fran Halsall guaranteed herself a busy final evening of the Champs as she secured a spot in the 50m Butterfly semis.
The British record holder – who will also compete in the 100m Freestyle final tonight – was fastest qualifier from the heats in 26.17 with Siobhan-Marie O’Connor and Jemma Lowe both clocking 26.93 to progress joint second.
