European medallist Allen set for British Champs
20th May 2013
European silver medallist Sophie Allen is the latest London 2012 Olympian to confirm her entry to the 2013 British Gas Swimming Championships.
Allen enjoyed a breakthrough 2012 season, winning 100m Breast bronze and 200m IM silver at the 2012 British Champs before claiming European silver and competing at her debut Olympics in the 200m IM.
Craig Gibbons and Craig Benson also made the Olympic team at last year’s Champs and both will return with the hope of booking World Championship spots.
Gibbons is a veteran of nine British Champs but his best performances were at his most recent at London Aquatics Centre last year where he won 50m Freestyle silver and 100m Freestyle bronze, both with personal best efforts.
The 27-year old will compete in the 50m and 100m Free again in Sheffield, as well as the 50m Backstroke.
Benson rose to prominence by claiming the World Junior 100m Breaststroke title in 2011, then springing a surprise to claim 100m Breast silver and book a spot on his first Olympic team as a 17-year old at last year’s Champs.
While Benson’s silver in 2012 was his first British Champs medal, the teenager will be one to watch across a trio of events this time round, having entered the 50m, 100m and 200m Breaststroke.
