Fogg closes in on 1500m Free hat-trick

Dan Fogg closed in on his third consecutive British title as he led qualifiers from the 1500m Freestyle heats on day five of the 2014 British Gas Swimming Championships in Glasgow.

The Olympic and world finalist clocked 15:19.58 to win his heat while 400m Freestyle silver medallist Nick Grainger won his heat in 15:22.49 to progress second fastest to tomorrow’s final.

Charlie Boldison broke two minutes for the first time to lead qualifiers in the 200m Backstroke.

The University of Stirling swimmer set 1:58.88 to book lane four for tonight’s final while Joe Patching (1:59.43) and Xavier Mohammed (2:01.42) will be either side of him after progressing second and third fastest.

Georgia Barton also clocked a personal best to qualify fastest from the women’s 200m Butterfly heats.

The City of Manchester swimmer touched in 2:11.14 to win her heat but faces a tough final with Hannah Miley (2:11.88), Elena Sheridan (2:12.22) and 100m Butterfly champion Rachael Kelly (2:12.58) qualifying strongly.

Paralympic, world and European champion Oliver Hynd will aim to secure a spot at his first Commonwealth Games in tonight’s SM8 200m Individual Medley final.

The 19-year old is the only entry in the event but sailed under the English nomination time for the Commonwealth Games with his 2:27.17 heat swim.

Lauren Quigley and Georgia Davies were separated by 0.01 seconds as they won their respective 50m Backstroke heats this morning.

Stockport Metro’s Quigley led qualifiers into tonight’s semi-finals with a 28.34 effort while Davies – who beat Quigley to the 100m Back title on day three – progressed in 28.35.

Davies’ National Sprint Squad teammate Francesca Halsall was third fastest through in 28.55.

Finally, defending silver medallist Ben Proud led the way from the men’s 50m Freestyle heats, clocking 22.67 to progress to the semis ahead of last year’s champion Adam Brown, the British record holder winning his heat in 22.74.
