Grainger leads 400m Freestyle qualifiers on Day One

The opening night of the British Gas Swimming Championships 2013 promises to be unforgettable with the top four swimmers in the men’s 400m Freestyle final qualifying less than half a second apart.

City of Sheffield’s Nick Grainger was the fastest qualifier in the heats, taking the win in 3.50.24 and slicing nearly five seconds off his lifetime best. He will go in lane four with Loughborough’s Daniel Fogg (3.50.52), Glasgow’s defending champion Robbie Renwick (3.50.66) and James Guy of Millfield (3.50.80) for company after they progress from second to fourth respectively.
Jazz Carlin (Swansea ITC) finished way ahead of the field to book lane four for day two's 800m final. Back on form, Carlin touched in 8.30.06 ahead of City of Sheffield’s Ellie Faulkner (8.33.86) and Jessica Thielmann of Newcastle (8.36.78)
City of Liverpool’s Michael Rock was three seconds clear of the field in the 200m Butterfly heats, finishing in 1.57.10. Roberto Pavoni of Loughborough ITC was second in 2.00.46 with Dan Wallace of Warrender third in 2.00.69.
Chris Walker-Hebborn (Bath ITC) was the fastest qualifier for the men’s 100m Back touching in 55.01 ahead of Liam Tancock (Loughborough ITC), who finished in 55.28. Guildford’s Marco Loughran was third in 55.29.
Francesca Halsall had clear water from her competitors, finishing half a second ahead of Loughborough training partner Amy Smith and Emma Wilkins in the 50m Free heats. Halsall touched in 25.06 with Smith 25.51 and Wilkins 25.56 respectively.
In the men’s event Ben Proud was the fastest qualifier ahead of tonight’s final in a personal best of 22.20 ahead of Adam Brown (22.40) and James Disney-May (22.68 PB).
Lauren Quigley (Stockport Metro) will go through to the semi-finals of the 200m Backstroke as fastest qualifier. Touching in 2.12.69, she beat Bebington’s Danielle Lowe (2.14.51) and Bath ITCs Lizzie Simmonds (2.14.94).
Georgina Evans was the fastest qualifier in the 100m Breaststroke for tonight’s semi final. She clocked a new PB of 1.08.78 ahead of Team Bath’s Stacey Tadd (1.09.30) and City of Leeds Sophie Taylor was third in 1.09.34.
Jemma Lowe was the fasted qualifier for tonight’s semi finals of the 200m Butterfly in 2.10.45. Sophie Allen set a PB of 2.11.54 to progress second fastest while Aimee Willmott also lowered her PB to 2.11.56 to rank third.
Youngsters Chris Steeples and Ross Murdoch swam personal best times, with Murdoch lowering his own Scottish record, to finish joint fastest in the in the heats of the 50m Breastroke both touching in 27.92 and will both take lane four in each of tonight’s semi finals.
