British Disability Swimming Points
To ensure a fair and level playing field swimmers with a disability are classified according to their swimming ability.
Disabled swimmers compete in two types of competitions:
- Disability specific competitions - swimmers compete against other swimmers of the same classification.
- Multi-Classification competitions - swimmers compete against other swimmers regardless of their classification. In Multi-classification events British Disability Points (BDPs) are used to determine finalists and medallists.
BDPs are similar to FINA points and are based on World Records for each classification, stroke, distance and gender with 1000 points equating to a World Record. The swimmer with most points in a race is the winner rather than the swimmer who touches first.
