Crawford revealed as voice of Olympic Synchro routine

7 June 2012

Critically acclaimed West End actor Michael Crawford has been unveiled as the voice of the British Synchronised Swimming’s Olympic routine.

The Team use a piece of music from the film Peter Pan which Crawford performs the voice over for after British Olympic Association’s (BOA) Ambassador Robin Cousins encouraged him to get involved.

Crawford’s powerful and emotive voice is heard from the start of the track as the athletes prepare for their first lift which wows the crowds. And then the British legend is heard signing off the track ‘Goodbye for now’.

On his involvement with the Olympic Synchronised Swimming Team Crawford commented: “Having failed to qualify for the 3000 meter steeple chase, I thought that was the end of my Olympic hopes, so when Robin called me, I was thrilled to be able to become a small part of the Olympics after all!

“Having seen the team in practice, I have such respect for the amount of hard work and effort that these young women have put into their Olympic dream and they will no doubt carry these wonderful memories with them for the rest of their lives”

The BOA’s Olympic Ambassador Robin Cousins added: “For me, it was about getting the audience and the girls one step closer with the story telling. As with skating you should never assume people know the music or the theme of the routine.

“Michael was an easy choice for me with what I needed to enhance the music and create some drama. And all he could do when I asked was say no! Fortunately he said yes and I think his voice really elevates the entire routine."

National Performance Director Biz Price said: “It’s been an honour working with someone of Michael’s calibre and the voice over for the Team Free routine has really inspired the athletes to perform at their best. I want to thank Michael and Robin for their work with the team and we all are excited about showcasing the British routine in front of the sold out British crowd.”
