Daley and Laugher among strong junior team in Adelaide

26th September 2012

Tom Daley and Jack Laugher are the star names in a 12-strong British Gas GBR Diving Team set for next month’s FINA World Junior Diving Championships in Adelaide, Australia.

Daley will be bringing to a close one of the most successful seasons of his career, having won the overall World Series title and European Championship gold before clinching an emotional bronze at London 2012.

The World Juniors is always a high standard of competition though so I will be going into the event aiming to perform my six dives to the best of my ability.

The 18-year old will compete in the Platform as well as combining with World Championship and World Cup finalist Laugher in the 3m Synchro at the competition which takes place from 8 - 13 October at the SA Aquatic & Leisure Centre.

Laugher will also compete in the Group A 1m and 3m Springboard, having won both titles in the Group B age group at the 2010 Championships.

London 2012 Olympians Hannah Starling and Alicia Blagg will also make the trip to Australia and Daley admits he’s keen to end his season on a high note.

“I'm looking forward to competing again at the World Junior Championships in Australia," Daley said.

"I have been on good form this year and winning my Olympic bronze medal has definitely been my highlight. The World Juniors is always a high standard of competition though so I will be going into the event aiming to perform my six dives to the best of my ability.

“We have a great team going over to Adelaide including Jack, Grace and Ross. I am really looking forward to testing out synchro on 3m with Jack too.

“This is the first time I will be doing 3m Synchro at an international but we've been training well together and I think our synchro is good. It's not my main event and but looking forward to giving it a go in a competition setting. “

Competing at his first World Juniors, Matty Lee will look to add the Group B 3m Springboard title to his European crown from earlier in the season while 18-year old Megan Sylvester will compete in her final junior competition in the Group A Platform, having also won European gold in July.

We will be looking to build on an encouraging year which included success at the European Junior Championships where we finished second in the medal table.

And Junior Development Manager Julian Bellan insists his young charges will be firmly in the medal hunt in Adelaide.

“We’ve selected a strong team for the World Junior Championships which will be competitive in both age groups,” said Bellan.

“We will be looking to build on an encouraging year which included success at the European Junior Championships where we finished second in the medal table and five of this current team won medals.

“Matty Lee won gold in the 3m Springboard and Grace Reid impressed with her consistency to win two medals on the 3m Springboard. Megan Sylvester will be competing at her last ever junior level competition and she will want to sign off with success.

“We also welcome back Tom Daley, Jack Laugher, Hannah Starling and Alicia Blagg to junior competition after competing at the Olympics. I will be looking for them to share their experiences with the rest of the team and showcase their skills against the tough junior competition.”
